Types And Applications Of Cermet Materials

Cermet is a composite material obtained with ceramics and metals. Metals are used as matrix phase and reinforcement phase is ceramic. But if we take a look at the compositions, ceramic constitutes around 965 of the whole material. Interphase bonding between ceramic and metal phases is done with relative solubility of metals and ceramics at elevated temperatures.

As you understand from its name that cermet is an acronym of CERamic-METal.

There are two types of cermets; cemented carbides and oxide-based cermets.

What Is Oxide-Based Cermet?

Aluminum oxide and magnesium oxide are used as a particulate phase in composite materials. In general, chromium is used as matrix metal, and other metals can be used as binders. The proportions of phases change with the changing material and material properties. General applications of oxide-based cermets thermocouple shields, cutting tools for machining operations, and mechanical seals.

What Is Cemented Carbide?

It is also another type of cermet that carbide is used as particulate in a metal matrix. General carbides that are used in cemented carbides are titanium carbide, tungsten carbide, and chromium carbide. General matrix metals are nickel and cobalt.

Cobalt is used for tungsten carbide and nickel is used as a matrix material for titanium carbide and chromium carbide. Like in other cermets, the composition of the matrix phase is very low compared with the particulate phase, which is around 5-15%. When the particulate phase decreases, hardness also decreases but transverse rupture strength increases.

CARBIDE PREFORM

Carbide preform is a kind of carbide rod blank in a special shape which is near the final cutting tool shape, customer can customize the preform. The reason for a preform exist is that the tungsten carbide is very hard after sintering, to do machining on a sintered tungsten carbide blank is very difficult, usually by grinding or slow wire cutting EDM, which are very slow and expensive. However, before sintering, the tungsten density is low, easy to be cut, chamfered, grooved, or trimmed to different shapes, then it is sintered to be a preform with a shape close to final cutter shape, which saves lots of after-sintering machining time, cost and labor.

T shape carbide preform is a typical preform shape, which has a very big blade head end and small shank end, one or more steps on the outer diameter of a carbide rod.

Carbide preforms are customized base on customer’s drawing, sample, or final cutter shape. Please contact the professional salesperson to get quotation case by case.

Definition of Nozzle

Turbo machines like steam turbines, water turbines and gas turbines produce power by utilising the kinetic energy of the jets produced by passing high pressure steam, water and gas through the devices called nozzles. Corresponding to the fluids used, the nozzles are called steam nozzles, water nozzles and gas nozzles.

These nozzles serve two purposes:

(1) To convert pressure energy and thermal energy into kinetic energy and

(2) To direct the fluid jet at the specific angle known as nozzle angle.

A nozzle is a device, a duct of varying cross-section area in which a steadily flowing fluid can be made to accelerate by a pressure drop along the duct.

So when a fluid flows through a nozzle, its velocity increases continuously and pressure decreases continuously.

What is Tungsten Carbide Rod?

Tungsten carbide rod, also known as “cemented carbide rod”, “hard alloy” or “hardmetal”, is a kind of metallurgic material which contains tungsten carbide rod powder (chemical formula: WC) and other binder (cobalt, nickel. etc.). It can be pressed and formed into customized shapes, can be grinded with precision, and can be welded with or grafted to other metals. Various types and grades of carbide rod can be designed as required for use in application intended, including chemical industry, oil & gas and marine as mining and cutting tools, mould and die, wear parts, etc..

Advantage of Tungsten Carbide Rod

  • It is famous for the high hardness and wear resistance in relation to other metals. Tungsten carbide rod is extremely hard, ranking about 9 on Mohs scale, and with a Vickers number of around 2600.
  • Keep the same properties even under the temperature of 500℃.
  • Twice as stiff as steel, with a Young’s modulus of approximately 530–700 GPa (77,000 to 102,000 ksi ).
  • Double the density of steel, a tungsten carbide rod made wear part is proven to last 3 to 6 times longer than a steel tool.

Carbide Preforms With Different Shapes And Sizes

A polymer encapsulated silicon carbide preforms system has been developed for use with Selective Laser Sintering.

Extensive studies with this carbide preforms material have provided information pertaining to processing and material parameters which most affect the strengths and densities of resulting green parts. The important parameters considered were particle size distribution of the powders, laser scanning conditions, and laser beam diameter.

Simple and complex shapes were easily produced with this carbide preforms material using optimized parameters. Green objects were infused with metal using their pressureless infiltration process to produce both metal matrix and ceramic matrix composites.

Fabrication of silicon carbide preform semiconductor

This work describes for the first time about the development of silicon carbide preform semiconductor doped optical fibre preform made by modified chemical vapor deposition (MCVD) process followed by solution doping technique. Quantum dot level nano crystals are observed after thermal annealing of the preform samples at 1400°C temperature.

We explained the formation of silicon carbide preform semiconductors within silica glass based optical fibre preform thermodynamically followed by material characterization through EPMA, SEM, TEM, and XRD to investigate material properties of the preform samples.

Such kind of optical fibre preforms will be suitable for making of silicon carbide preform semiconductor doped optical fibres which may open the door to use itself in the field of non-linear optical devices.

Carbide Disc for PCBN&PCD Substrate

Carbide disc for PCBN&PCD substrate are circular abrasive discs that remove material, light defects, corrosion, paint, and rust from wood, metal, and plastic surfaces.

They attach to carbide disc for PCBN&PCD substrate sanders, angle grinders, or handheld rotary tools, and they allow for good control of a workpiece, as workers can see the workpiece at all times when carbide disc for PCBN&PCD substrate are in use.

Coarse grit removes material such as welds on metal or mill marks on wood, while fine grit buffs out tool marks and evens out edges. Adhesive-backed and hook-and-loop discs allow for quick switchouts of carbide disc for PCBN&PCD substrate.

Industrial carbide disc for PCBN&PCD substrate rolls keep fresh discs on-hand in applications requiring heavy or frequent sanding, such as in woodshops and production facilities.

Woodworking Insert

Installing a threaded insert into wood without the woodworking insert toolhow to install a threaded woodworking insert into wood without the insert tool.

Threaded woodworking inserts are great fasteners that dramatically extend the life of a hole by creating a metal threading point instead of using wood repeatedly. By using metal woodworking inserts, the bolt can be installed and removed multiple times without diminishing the hold strength of the hole. The downside of threaded woodworking inserts is that they usually require some type of vendor specific bit or driver to install them properly.

We, for example, carry the threaded woodworking insert install tool. This tool works great for installing these woodworking inserts but what happens if you get to a job site and you’ve forgotten the bit that makes working with these woodworking inserts so easy at home? The answer is simple, use a tap bolt to create a different drive point for the woodworking insert.
